My mom had dementia in her 90s.....

Before my mother died at 94, she was diagnosed with some sort of dementia. Now my question is. Just because you're old, does that mean that you'll have dementia eventually, in your 90's? And also, is a late diagnosis genetic, or just because your old? Thanks.

  1. Hi - Thank you for reaching out. Your questions are not uncommon among individuals who have had a loved one diagnosed with dementia, and I hope others will chime in with their experience!

While older age is the biggest known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, Alzheimer’s is not a typical component of getting older. I am sharing an article here that discuss several potential risk factors and how genetics play into a diagnosis: https://alzheimersdisease.net/risk-factors and genetics
