Caring For A Loved One - Seeking Advice On My Mother's Progression

Well, my story is a sad one. I cared for my mother prior to her dementia. And have seen it progress quite quickly. One of the things I am struggling with is her lack of sleep at night. She tends to speak as if she was having a conversation with somebody and at times doesn't fall asleep until 4 in the morning. Also, she speaks a lot about people who have already passed. Can anybody relate to these things and any advice? My mother is 89 and I care for her 24-7.

  1. Hi @Luz,
Hallucinations can take the form of conversing with passed loved ones. Sundowning is a stressful symptom, but it can be controlled. This article may help with some tips on how to establish a routine that will, hopefully, get you both more sleep: https://alzheimersdisease.net/living/caregiver-tips-sundowning. -Warmly, Donna (team member)

    1. Thank you for your response. I am sorry that she is not sleeping and I imagine you are not getting enough sleep as well.
Are you able to get any support or help and get some rest yourself? Have you considered turning on a television in her room when she is trying to sleep?

      1. Melatonin can help if she hasn’t had a nap earlier. Our doctor said it’s not helpful if she isn’t sleepy or has had a nap. And limit caffeine. I don’t give my mom extra to drink after dinner. She can nurse her tea she had for dinner if there is any left. That helps her not to have to use the bathroom as early and she isn’t as wet. She wears pull-ups. I always have her go right before bed. Having to use the bathroom can interrupt sleep. Blessings, Kathy M team member.
