severe speech difficulties in mid stage Alzheimer's

My wife's cognitive functions are fine but she suffers from short term memory loss. Six months ago her voice pitch changed significantly. In the last week she has almost lost her ability to speak. Could there be some other neurological issue in play here?

  1. , thank you for your question, the answer was surprising to me. I know that AD shows changes in speech patterns and word recognition, etc, but I did not know that it could affect, timbre, pitch and texture, but I did find a study that looked at just that issue: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/brb3.3271
I hope that helps some of your questions and gives you some questions to bring to your doctor. - Warmly, Donna (Team Member)

    1. Many thanks Donna. This suggests that the sequence of reflex actions in speaking and swallowing are impacted while her cognition remains high. Very interesting. I’m going to persevere with her speech therapy and hope that we can at least stabilise it for a while. Thanks for caring Donna
