Tips for getting dad with Alzheimer's to take medicine?

because of my dads alzheimers, he has developed fungal issues on his body. i can't seem to get him to not only take his heart medicine but to apply the ointment his doctor prescribed for his fungus.

  1. I am sorry to hear about your situation. This is hard. If you haven't already, and if allowed in pill form, you could try to crush the medication and add it to a smoothie or a spoonful of pudding to see if he can take it this way. This worked most of the time when I cared for my father. I tended to apply my father's skin lotions and creams after bathing. This could be an option. Does your father's cream need to be used frequently, and is he hesitant about the application because his skin is sensitive? A scheduled routine of cream application could help if you haven't tried this approach. You might try to apply the cream while your father holds something like a stuffy or a small fidget. I learned that playing my father's favorite music helped distract him, making him more cooperative. Sending along support and comfort. All my best, Nancy Team member

    1. Hi , I agree with Nancy, the pudding or applesauce trick always worked with our residents. You can even use yogurt or ice cream. It was seen as a treat, and not something to avoid. And yes, the antifingal should have an oral formulation. Let us know if you try it and what works for you. - Warmly, Donna (team member)
