Caregiving with my own health issues - any suggestions?

I had a heart attack in June and a stent, then a month later a very high blood pressure episode with some pressure and another stent. I'm not recovering my strength, and finding it harder to care for myself let alone my husband who is about a stage 6 Alzheimer's. I am currently signing up for respite/home health through the VA, but just wondering if there are any tips, experiences you might share of your own or words of inspiration or wisdom?

  1. Thank you for reaching out. My thoughts go out to you as you take care of your husband while facing your own health challenges. You are not alone. I found an article by one of our contributors who faced a similar situation. https://alzheimersdisease.net/living/chronic-condition-while-caregiving. I think it's a very good thing that you are signing up for those VA benefits. In my dealing with government agencies like the VA, I would make sure to follow up regularly to see if you can speed up the process. Tell them what you are dealing with currently and see how that might help. Also, if anyone among your friends, family, local legislators can assist you in speeding up the process, I would consider those avenues. Please keep in touch and let us know how things go. 1. Thank you!

      1. You are dealing with so much! I hope you are on the mend and feeling better everyday. Your husband is blessed to have you. You do have to take care of yourself, too. You are a package deal. It's important to ask for help, which you are. You can talk to his doctor about home health, too, to see what he qualifies for. A social worker could be a good place to start, too. They can help with the process and know of many options. There was one connected with my mom's neurology office. She helped us a lot. Insurance covered it. The Caregivers Corner under the menu on our site has a tone of resources. I don't want to overwhelm you with too many suggestions. Hopefully this will be a few to help. You are doing great!!
