Long term memory care or assisted living

My mom has been in long term memory care for 3 months... she receives 1 additional service and that is her daily meds. We were told because of mom's zero short term memory she would be best fitted for the ltmc. But we are seeing differently. Yes, moms short term memory is gone but she is very mobile, takes care of her own needs i.e. personal hygiene, etc. She does not utilize the programs in the ltmc because she has nothing in common with the other residents. The other residents are so much farther along than mom. We are questioning her placement and wonder if she would socially do better in the assisted living? Thank you for listening.

  1. I think you bring up a great point. Every person is unique and presents symptoms differently and at different times. Have you had a chance to speak to her doctors about a more appropriate level of care for her? Have you checked out assisted living options in your area? Sounds like she can handle many activities of daily living. Scott Team Member

    1. thank you!!!

  2. A forgotten point on my earlier post.... mom is shy and is afraid to put herself out there..... what if we make a move to assisted living and her behavior stays the same, she has to establish a new routine, is in a new facility, etc.....I guess what I am asking is what if mom's move to assisted living plays out to be the same behavior..... is it worth the disruption?

    1. In my experience, changes in routine can be disruptive. It may be different in your situation. Each person handles change differently. How does she handle change, in general? Scott Team Member
