Max the Cat

My husband has advanced Alzheimer’s. We have a cat Max that he is attached too. He has to know at all times where Max is. When we get ready to leave the house he has to be able to physically see Max before we leave. Will he eventually not recognize Max? Concerned.

  1. Hi, Patty. I'm sure it is possible that he could eventually not have such an interest in Max, but you know what? I bet Max will still love him just as much. It sounds like they have such a sweet relationship. My dad didn't forget my dog, Layla. Here's a piece I wrote about my dad and the visits we orchestrated between him and Layla. ( https://alzheimersdisease.net/living/pet-visits ) - I wish you all the best.

    1. I just went through the heart wrenching decision on Friday to put our beloved dog, Mia down. She was 13. It's been 3 days and Peter hasn't noticed she is missing. The good news is that our other dog Mollie, now gets ALL of his pets and love at a time when she needs it most.

      1. I agree with Lisa and Amy in that it really depends where your loved one is at on the journey. My Pop lost his dog Scooter while in the early-to-mid stage of AD. He took the loss hard with a deep depression for a few days before he was able to come out of it and move forward. I hope things are going well. -- Shannon (team member)
