Alzheimer’s Mother Hidden Away Somewhere

I’ve been trying to locate where my mother’s half sister placed her after she lived with her a couple months in a mobile home in Lake Placid Florida. Sandy’s uncooperative in disclosure. I want to fly out to Florida to bring flowers as well as make sure there’s no elder abuse. Mom, 84 has advanced Alzheimer’s a couple years but was likely undiagnosed with “young onset” version in her 30’s.

I noted these caregiver places are secretive from family searching to find their relatives! Could be HIPPA. The one place mother was living temporarily in 2021 I found from Yelp! The assisted living spa shared a lot of info after my phone inquiry, even the name on the power of attorney because I didn’t know who had mom. Her assisted living info in Las Vegas was confirmed and her sister Sandy coordinated everything, including the sale of mom’s condo.

I learned Sandy just reopened her travel agent business and it’s obvious she moved mom to a facility. There’s no way I’ll ever find her the way they’ve set up the system there. It’s just very frustrating.

  1. This is a sticky situation, and if there is any concern for her safety, I would strongly recommend contacting Older Adult Protective Services. (https://alzheimersdisease.net/elder-abuse-oaps). There may be laws in place protecting or implying your responsibilities to your mom, but since it sounds like there is a power of attorney in place already, it may be best to consult with an elder law attorney. We hope that this is helpful. Please keep us posted. All the best, Patty, AlzheimersDisease.net Team Member
