After P-tau blood test results were high suggesting Alzheimer’s would Amyloids PET scan be recommended or would it be a waste of time

My wife has been diagnosed (originally) with mild dementia, verified by two doctors. She recently got results of blood tests an all 3(?) we’re out of range. P-tau was very high indicating likelihood of Alzheimer’s. Her Gerontologist said some of her patients have it done but most don’t and it wouldn’t change her treatment plan. I’ve read some reports that say p-tau can find things in the blood before it would show up in a amyloid PET. My wife thinks she might like to get it just to see if it shows anything the P-tau didn’t pickup but she really hasn’t made up her mind. Would it be worthwhile to get the PET that may or may not show anything additional?

  1. Hi , what is your wife's doctor's recommendation? Are they leaving it up to her to decide whether to have the PET scan? If your wife wants to get the scan, did it seem as though the doctor would put it through to insurance? Insurance coverage may be an obstacle if the scan won't change her treatment plan, but if she wants to move forward, she should definitely try. Please keep us posted. Jill (Team Member)

  2. Her doctor - a gerontologist where we went for 2nd opinion - is Leaving it up to her. She says some of her patients get it but most don’t. And she did say it wouldn’t change her treatment plan. I’ve looked up comparisons between the P-tau blood test and the PET scan and the accuracy of the two is similar, about 90%. Wife’s P-tau was at 1.10 when it should be < 0.15 so the interpretation for developing Alzheimer’s says HIGH LIKELIHOOD (Caps because that’ll hoe it’s printed). If it was me, I’d get it (as I’ve had four in the past 9 years, prior to and post treatment for prostate cancer followed by tongue cancer). My wife is leaning toward getting it but is still kinda on the fence. She has an appointment with her neurologist next week so we’ll get his opinion. They should be covered by medicare, mine were. The closest place we can get that particular PET is 50 miles away, but not a bad drive.

    1. keep us posted with what the neurologist says. Hopefully that doctor will help your wife make a final decision. Jill (Team Member)
